a note on social classes: this is old money, you can't simply be an aristocrat overnight and most aristocrats are land-wealthy but haven't a penny to their name so they marry their children off to the nouveau riche to take care of their financial burdens.
(which should be reflected in your application)
upper-class: they are the nouveau-riche. the up and coming in society. most aristocrats look down on them as the upper-class attempt to elbow their way into those prominent families. their families will have recently come of money, either in the last couple of years or past couple of decades - so decorum might not yet be readily instilled.
middle-class: well respected in the community, and financially comfortable. think bankers, doctors, and successful shop owners. their clothes might be a little plainer, and perhaps they don't have nearly as many servants but they are certainly not among the poor. they enjoy scandal and gossip nearly as much as the upper-classes, though they do understand the concept of hard work and sometimes work and mingle with those of the lower-classes. it is not looked down for one of them to marry with the upper-class or aristocrats, although it's not exactly preferred unless each has something to gain.
lower middle-class: it is a very rare occurence to see that of the lower middle-class to have companions in the higher classes, although there are exemptions. they serve and work for people of all social stations, and often know and hear more gossip that others would pay dearly to hear. most immigrants from the countryside are either part of the middle, or lower-middle class. their financial status varies greatly depending on the individual. many are well-off and comfortable in their way of living, and able to afford some pleasantries for their family. though there are others who have found it hard to hold onto the money they earn.
working class: unfortunately, for these people - they do not exist to that of the upper-classes. they are there to be ordered what to do next. they live for the families they serve, and nothing else. upper-class citizens do not socialize with them under any circumstances besides pleasantries exchanged with family and server. however, they certainly know a fair few pieces of information that could cause a riotous amount of scandal in the papers, but their loyalty to their employers prevents this. though there are a few of them who would do absolutely anything to rise about their station, with a drive compared to none.
