Thomas Tristan Grey had never wondered of the origin of his middle name. His brothers inherited theirs from family relatives, and so Thomas believed the same. But now he knew. He was that child. Now grown into a young man who had realized that gaining information about who his father was, he had in turn lost his own way. He was an orphan now, alone. And no one could ever know.
On his return home, he found comfort not in the cold, empty halls of his new home where his family was spinning quickly to destruction, but in the warm, crowded taverns of the illicit crowds. As he grew, he fell in "love" countless of times with countless of women. He's grown reckless with everything. From his emotions to his actions, he throws about in wild abandon. He has abandoned the name of Thomas, except for that around his family and when he and his cousin cavort around in high society. To everyone else, he has now become "Tristan". Ironically, it is the name his cousin has always called him only due to the fact that Edmund's own younger brother's name was Thomas. Tristan and Edmund often enjoy dallying, scandalizing and shocking high society, although Edmund is considerably less bold and rash in his actions and choices. However, Tristan prefers the grimy areas of London where he consorts at night with "loose women," common thieves and convicts. While during the day, he continues with his cousin as a shipping apprentice to his Uncle.
His grandmother on his mother's side has come to stay with them now, bringing along her disdain and wretched parrot. For nearly a month ago, his mother suffered a severe mental breakdown in the parlor room and had to be discreetly escorted to the hospital. Where upon arrival, they decided her need to be enrolled in a recovery center in the countryside, although Tristan and the rest of his family tell others that she is merely in the country visiting a sister. It has been hard to cope with his ailing mother, especially since he's been forced into the position of the older brother. James, the older brother, unbeknownst to Tristan and the others, slowly found an addiction to opium in the past couple of years. It was his brother's own way of escaping the pains of his family. Tristan learned of this by accident – he had been drunk, wandering about town with a group of fellow cohorts when they stumbled into an opium den. It was there he recognized his older brother who he had seen as so strong and such a stable force in his upturned world, lying listlessly with sallow skin in the thick fumes of opium. Tristan's family is breaking and collapsing around him, and he has found himself helpless in face of it.
He doesn't know who he is, or who his true family is for his mother, as proven by the letter – was Beth, a commoner. He cannot reveal this or the other grievances in his family in fear of their name and his own future being disgraced. For if revealed, he will hold no blood relation to his Uncle and the help he has provided.
For what could be more disastrous than a fallen family?
A young man who can never rise again.[/ul]
